DJI launches DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – a great development and powerful specifications!

Nearly half a decade ago, the inception of the DJI Osmo Pocket marked the start of its compact and stabilized camera journey. Fast forward two years to October 2020, and the DJI Pocket 2, an evolution of its predecessor, graced us with a larger sensor, a wider lens, and various enhancements. Now, three years beyond that milestone, DJI is unveiling the latest iteration, the Osmo Pocket 3, boasting an even larger image sensor and a plethora of valuable upgrades.

Let’s take a look at the features and specifications of DJI’s newly announced pocket-sized gimbal camera  .

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – Bigger sensor, bigger screen

While using the earlier Pocket 2, we encountered significant challenges in operating and monitoring the image due to its exceedingly small screen. Connecting our phone to the Pocket 2 became almost imperative to gain a clear view of our subject. This is why I’m delighted to witness the inclusion of a significantly larger screen in the new Osmo Pocket 3. The camera now boasts a 2-inch OLED touchscreen that can be rotated (with a resolution of 314 x 556 and a brightness of 700 nits), rendering it much more practical as a standalone device.

One significant enhancement comes in the form of a larger image sensor incorporated into the Osmo Pocket 3, which now boasts a 1-inch CMOS sensor. In contrast to the Pocket 2’s 64MP sensor, the Osmo Pocket 3 features a reduced resolution of approximately 9.4MP. Consequently, each pixel is significantly larger, suggesting improved low-light performance, a topic we will delve into further.

Aside from these two improvements, the Osmo Pocket 3, of course, still includes the core of the Osmo Pocket series – a 3-axis, gimbal-stabilized camera head.

The Pocket 3 boasts a fixed aperture lens with an f/2.0 setting, providing an identical field of view as the Pocket 2. It offers a 20mm equivalent focal length and a minimum focus distance of 0.2m. To maintain a shutter speed at or near 180 degrees, ND filters are required due to the fixed aperture. The advantage here is that the Pocket 3 is compatible with magnetic filters, which will be available from DJI and various third-party manufacturers.

Up to 4K video recording at 120 fps

In normal video recording mode, Osmo Pocket 3 offers the following recording modes:

• 4K (16:9): 3840 x 2160 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 2.7K (16:9): 2688 x 1512 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 1080p (16:9): 1920 x 1080 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 3K (1:1): 3072 x 3072 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 2160p (1:1): 2160 x 2160 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 1080p (1:1): 1080 x 1080 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 3K (9:16): 1728 x 3072 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 2.7K (9:16): 1512 x 2688 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
• 1080p (16:9): 1080 x 1920 at 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps

As we can see, the camera also offers 16:9 portrait shooting modes, but it is only part of the horizontal sensor. Unlike small drones, the camera head cannot rotate 90 degrees.

In slow motion mode, the Osmo Pocket 3 can record 4K UHD at up to 120 fps or FullHD at up to 240 fps. There’s also a low-light video mode that, according to DJI, produces clearer shots in low light and is limited to a maximum of 30 frames per second.

With DJI’s D-Log M flat color profile (or HLG profile), the camera can record 10-bit 4:2:0 video with H.265 compression. There are also 8-bit H.264 recording modes with standard color profiles. The maximum bit rate is 130 Mbps. Footage can be saved to MicroSD memory cards (up to 512GB supported).

The camera can also capture still images in Raw and/or JPEG format at a maximum resolution of 9.4 megapixels. This actually makes the new Pocket 3 less capable of capturing still images, but for me personally, larger pixels are much better as I think most users will be using the camera primarily (or only) for video recording.

Camera body, audio, battery

One of the advantages of the Osmo Pocket 3 is that, despite its larger sensor and screen, it maintains its “portable” nature with a weight of just 179 grams and dimensions measuring 139.7 x 42.2 x 33.5 mm. Another noteworthy feature is the automatic gimbal lock, which securely holds the camera gimbal in the stowed position.

Regarding audio recording, DJI claims that the camera now boasts three built-in microphones, enhancing wind noise reduction and delivering omni-directional stereo sound. Additionally, the Pocket 3 is fully compatible with the DJI Mic 2 wireless transmitter, offering 24-bit audio recording capabilities onboard.

DJI claims that the Osmo Pocket 3’s 1,300 mAh internal battery can be charged to 80% in just 16 minutes (to 100% in 32 minutes). On full battery, the camera should be able to record up to 116 minutes of 4K footage at 60fps (according to DJI testing).

Smart features and creative modes

Expanding upon its autofocus functionality, the camera provides an array of intelligent features, including ActiveTrack 6.0 with multiple tracking modes. Additionally, the Osmo Pocket 3 has the ability to function as an HD webcam or enable live streaming via a smartphone connection. Furthermore, it boasts a built-in timecode feature, simplifying the synchronization process during post-production.

Other creative modes include:

• SpinShot – Produces smooth 180-degree camera movements with one hand.
• Motionlapse – Captures a time-lapse video while in motion.
• Digital Zoom – Up to 4x digital zoom allows you to get closer to your subject.
• Panorama – Takes multiple photos and stitches them together to get a panoramic photo.

DJI’s LightCut app can connect to the Osmo Pocket 3 and automatically edit and create 4K video from selected footage. It includes a variety of templates and doesn’t even need to download full-size files to your smartphone for video editing.

As usual, DJI offers a range of accessories that improve the versatility of the Osmo Pocket 3. These include the following products:

• Osmo Pocket 3 Battery Grip – The battery grip has a built-in 950mAh battery, which can increase the playback time by approximately 62% when connected to the Pocket 3. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is available now and comes in two different packages:

• Osmo Pocket 3 (includes camera, Type-C to Type-C PD cable, protective case, DJI wrist strap, and grip with 1/4-inch thread) which retails for $519 (about €539 in Europe including VAT) .

• Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo (includes the entire Osmo Pocket 3 assembly plus DJI Mic 2 transmitter with windshield, magnetic clip, battery grip, mini tripod and carrying case) which retails for $669 (about €679 in Europe including VAT ).
