DJI Mavic 4 Pro Released: Triple Rotating Cameras with D-Log, Up to 6K60 and 4K120 Video, 100MP 4/3″ Wide Camera, and Improved Telephoto Lens

DJI has unveiled its new drone, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro, representing a significant evolution in the popular Mavic series. The drone features an advanced imaging system comprising three cameras mounted on an innovative rotating gimbal, with support for D-Log color profile across all lenses and high-resolution, high-frame-rate video recording capabilities.

Drone and Design Overview

The design of the Mavic 4 Pro has undergone a noticeable change compared to the previous generation. The traditional hanging gimbal system has been replaced with a spherical “Infinity Gimbal” integrated into the front of the aircraft’s body. This new design not only improves aerodynamics but also allows for unprecedented camera movement capabilities.

The drone is slightly heavier with a takeoff weight of 1063 grams compared to 958 grams for the Mavic 3 Pro. However, this increase is compensated by a new 95Wh battery that provides a longer flight time of up to 51 minutes. The drone’s maximum speed reaches 90 km/h (in FCC mode), while the maximum video transmission range is 30 km using the improved O4+ transmission system.

The front LiDAR sensor for obstacle avoidance has been moved to one of the front arms due to the larger size of the new gimbal at the front.

The drone is available with two internal storage options: a standard version with 64GB capacity (approximately 42GB available storage) and a Creator Combo version with 512GB capacity (approximately 460GB available storage).

Triple Rotating Camera System

The triple-camera system mounted on the “Infinity Gimbal” is the most prominent feature of the Mavic 4 Pro. The gimbal can freely rotate 360 degrees around the roll axis, opening up new creative possibilities such as capturing “Dutch angle” shots and full camera rotations.

The full gimbal rotation also allows for true vertical shooting with all cameras by simply rotating the entire module 90 degrees with the press of a button, while retaining all available resolutions and frame rates from the horizontal mode. The gimbal can also tilt up to 70 degrees upwards for capturing low-angle shots without the propellers appearing in the frame.

The camera system consists of the following lenses:

  • Main Hasselblad Camera (28mm): Features a large 4/3-inch CMOS sensor with 100MP resolution. It has a variable aperture ranging from f/2.0 to f/11, with focus extending from 2 meters to infinity.
  • Medium Telephoto Camera (70mm): Equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with 48MP resolution. It has a fixed f/2.8 aperture and a focus range from 3 meters to infinity.
  • Long Telephoto Camera (168mm): Comes with a larger 1/1.5-inch CMOS sensor with 50MP resolution. It has a fixed f/2.8 aperture and a focus range from 3 meters to infinity.

All three cameras support Dual Native ISO Fusion technology to improve performance in different lighting conditions and provide better detail.

Video and Photo Capabilities

Video capabilities have been significantly enhanced in the Mavic 4 Pro. All cameras now support D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG color profiles, providing greater flexibility in post-production and ensuring a consistent look across footage captured with different lenses.

Video Recording Capabilities:

  • Main Camera (28mm): Can record video at up to 6K resolution at 60 frames per second (HDR) and 4K at 120 frames per second for slow motion.
  • Medium Telephoto Camera (70mm): Records video at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (HDR) and 4K at 120 frames per second for slow motion.
  • Long Telephoto Camera (168mm): Records video at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (HDR) and 4K at 100 frames per second for slow motion.

All three cameras support standard video recording at frame rates such as 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 frames per second. Higher frame rates are recorded as slow-motion video.

Regarding codecs and bitrates, the cameras support:

  • H.264 8-bit 4:2:0 with a bitrate of 90 Mbps (for FullHD resolutions only).
  • H.265 (HEVC) 10-bit 4:2:0 with a bitrate of 180 Mbps.
  • H.264 ALL-I 10-bit 4:2:2 with a bitrate of up to 1200 Mbps (available only on the 512GB Creator Combo version).

For still photos, the main Hasselblad camera can capture stunning 100MP images in both RAW and JPEG formats. The high resolution provides rich detail and greater possibilities for cropping and processing. The other cameras also support high-resolution photo capture (48MP and 50MP) and features like stacking up to 5 RAW frames to improve image quality.

Other Features and Improved Performance

The Mavic 4 Pro also includes improvements in other crucial features:

  • Obstacle Avoidance: The obstacle avoidance system has been enhanced to provide omnidirectional sensing even in low-light conditions (down to 0.1 lux), thanks to the front LiDAR sensor. The drone can effectively detect and avoid obstacles during flight and even during Smart RTH.
  • Intelligent Tracking: ActiveTrack 360 has been improved to keep the subject centered in the frame even if a part of it is obscured. The system can also recognize and track vehicles up to a distance of 200 meters.
  • Video Transmission: The new O4+ system provides high-definition video transmission with a range of up to 30 km, with stronger signal stability and improved anti-interference capabilities. The transmission supports 10-bit HDR video.
  • RC Pro 2 Controller: The drone comes with the new foldable RC Pro 2 controller, which features a bright 7-inch Mini-LED screen that can be rotated. The screen supports displaying D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG footage and covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. The screen can be rotated to portrait orientation for synchronized vertical capture.

The DJI Mavic 4 Pro is available in three different configurations: the standard version with the RC 2 controller, the Fly More Combo which includes additional batteries and accessories, and the Creator Combo version with larger internal storage (512GB) and support for H.264 ALL-I 10-bit 4:2:2 codec.
