Blackmagic Design Unveils URSA Cine 12K for $7K
Blackmagic Design has introduced a streamlined version of its flagship large-format cinema camera, the URSA Cine 12K LF Body, with a price tag of $6,995. This move seems targeted at seasoned cinematographers and rental houses that already own camera rigging solutions, offering them a cost-effective entry into the 12K ecosystem without compromising on the camera’s core capabilities.
The new body-only variant retains the core specifications of its fully-equipped counterpart, including the 12K large-format RGBW sensor (36 x 24mm) and 14.5 stops of dynamic range (as measured at SNR = 1 in CineD’s lab test). What differentiates this version is not what it offers, but what has been removed—it excludes the shoulder mount, handles, multiple lens mounts, battery plates, power supply, and the 8TB media module that were included in the original package.
No 8TB media module, but features dual CFexpress Type B slots
Instead of the 8TB media module, Blackmagic has integrated a dual CFexpress card module, offering a more standard—though less capacious—storage solution. The camera comes with a locking EF mount by default, while PL and LPL mounts are available separately.
This release comes at an intriguing time, as many production houses are evaluating their high-resolution acquisition options. While 12K may seem excessive for current delivery formats, the ability to shoot at multiple resolutions (12K, 8K, or 4K) while utilizing the full sensor provides significant flexibility. Additionally, its high frame rates—80 fps at 12K 3:2, 144 fps at 8K 3:2, and up to 224 fps at 8K 2.4:1—position it as a serious contender in the high-end production market.
Is the URSA Cine 12K LF Body a reaction to the ARRI ALEXA 35 Base Model?
In light of ARRI’s recent announcement of the ARRI ALEXA 35 Base Model, which also provides a more affordable entry into the ARRI ecosystem (though at a significantly higher price of around €50K), one might wonder if Blackmagic’s decision is a response to ARRI or a sign of a slowing cinema market, where both companies are hoping to boost sales of their inventory. The answer is likely a combination of these factors, but we may never truly know.
What else is missing from the standard set?
However, potential buyers should consider additional costs. While the $6,995 price tag is appealing, creating a fully functional camera package will require a substantial investment in accessories. The body-only approach means that everything from power solutions, rigging, to monitoring options must be sourced separately. However, this can be beneficial for operators who already have preferred solutions for these components. It’s still surprising that, in essence, you’re saving over 50% compared to the full-price URSA Cine 12K set and still receive the fully-featured camera.
Is the URSA Cine 12K (Body) the capable camera for lowest price?
The launch of the URSA Cine 12K LF Body appears to be another smart strategy to “drop the price without dropping the price” of a high-performance camera. In a slowing cinema market with shrinking budgets, this clearly capable camera might catch the attention of feature film and scripted series production companies, which may now face a choice between renting an ARRI ALEXA or owning this new Blackmagic URSA Cine.
Just yesterday, we released a guest post by Leon Barnard, who produced an in-depth video and article on the “revolutionary” 12K sensor of the URSA Cine 12K LF – definitely worth checking out if you missed it!
Whether this stripped-down version will appeal to its target market remains to be seen, but it certainly presents an intriguing option for productions seeking high-resolution acquisition capabilities without the added overhead of a full kit.
The camera is available immediately through Blackmagic Design’s global reseller network, priced at $6,995, excluding local duties and taxes.
