FUJIFILM X half: A Creative Fusion of Vintage Charm and Modern Imaging
FUJIFILM X half: A Creative Fusion of Vintage Charm and Modern Imaging
FUJIFILM has officially unveiled the X half, a lightweight and compact digital camera that bridges the gap between analog inspiration and digital innovation. Weighing just 240 grams (8.5 ounces), this stylish device draws its design cues from half-frame film cameras, offering a unique and creative approach to photography and content creation.
Although not targeted directly at professional users, the X half stands out thanks to its originality. It allows users to capture vertically oriented photos and videos, which can be combined into a single frame either in-camera or via a dedicated smartphone app. This app further expands creative possibilities, letting users edit images by changing the dividing line’s color or width, and even swap the left and right sides.
Another highlight of the camera is its ability to print photos directly using compatible FUJIFILM Instax smartphone printers, reinforcing its role as a fun and tactile tool for capturing memories.
From a design perspective, the X half feels like a hybrid between FUJIFILM’s Instax line and its more traditional X-series fixed-lens cameras. It could easily be described as the ideal “first FUJIFILM camera” for newcomers looking for a balance between simplicity and style.
At the heart of the X half is a vertically oriented 1-inch backside-illuminated sensor, enabling the signature vertical 2-in-1 photo creation. Paired with a fixed 10.8mm f/2.8 prime lens (equivalent to 32mm in full-frame terms), the camera is optimized for ease of use and creativity. Images are saved in JPEG format only—fitting for the casual and lifestyle-oriented audience it’s aimed at.
On the visual side, the camera offers 13 of FUJIFILM’s renowned Film Simulations, emulating the classic looks of analog film stocks. It also introduces three new creative filters: Light Leak, Halation, and Expired Film, along with additional effects like grain simulation and a retro-style date stamp. For fans of the Instax aesthetic, eight more filters are included from that lineup.
Users can choose between virtual film “roll sizes” of 36, 54, or 72 exposures, and experience a nostalgic film-like shooting process that even includes manually advancing frames using the Frame Advance Lever after each shot.
Despite its retro touches, the camera includes modern elements: a USB-C port, a small built-in LED light, and an optical viewfinder. On the rear, there are two LCD displays—a capsule-shaped screen for film simulation selection, and a larger touchscreen LCD with a 3:4 aspect ratio for menu navigation and live view shooting.
As described by Victor Ha, Vice President of FUJIFILM North America’s Electronic Imaging and Optical Devices Divisions, the X half is “a love letter to compact cameras,” merging nostalgic appeal with the convenience of modern digital tools, making it easy to incorporate into everyday life.
Availability and Pricing
The FUJIFILM X half will be available in three color options: Silver, Charcoal Silver, and Black. The camera is expected to hit the market in late June 2025, with a retail price of $849.99.
