Canon has recently unveiled a trio of lenses, including the RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z, along with two new “entry-level” and more budget-friendly options. These new lenses are the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS. Notably, the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM stands out as the first wide-angle zoom lens designed for APS-C EOS R cameras, offering a lightweight and compact solution at just 150g/5.3oz. On the other hand, the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS is a compact super-telephoto zoom lens designed for full-frame image sensors, complete with built-in image stabilization. Slightly more than a year following the introduction of Canon’s EOS R7 and R10, the inaugural mirrorless hybrid APS-C cameras in the EOS R series, the company is extending its collection of lenses with cost-effective and adaptable choices: the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS.

The Canon RF-S10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is a wide-angle zoom lens that is designed to work seamlessly with all APS-C Canon EOS R-series cameras, such as the EOS R100, EOS R50, EOS R10, and EOS R7. Remarkably lightweight at just 150g/5.3oz, its collapsible construction allows it to maintain a compact profile when not in use. However, it extends to various lengths as you adjust the focal length while zooming in or out.

The lens is equipped with a zoom ring and a user-assignable control ring. Notably, the control ring on this Canon RF lens lacks click-stops, a first for the series. Internally, the Canon RF-S10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM boasts an STM (Stepping Motor) autofocus drive system, promising seamless autofocus performance for video shooting. Among these elements, there are two UD-glass elements and one aspherical element, strategically positioned to mitigate chromatic aberrations and minimize lens flares. The aperture diaphragm comprises seven blades, facilitating creative control over depth of field. When it comes to focusing, the lens can achieve a minimum distance of 14cm (5.5 inches) in Autofocus mode and 8.6cm (3.4 inches) in Manual focus mode. The Canon RF200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM is a lightweight super-telephoto zoom lens with a starting length of 12.4 inches (31.4 cm) when retracted at 200mm. As you zoom, the lens barrel extends to accommodate different focal lengths. It weighs approximately 4.5 pounds (2.05 kg).

This super-telephoto zoom lens is designed to accommodate full-frame image sensors and boasts dust and weather-resistant features. Additionally, it incorporates a built-in image stabilizer capable of providing up to 5.5 stops of stabilization. The lens also includes a rotatable tripod mount for added convenience, and for those seeking even greater reach than the 800mm it offers, it is compatible with Canon’s RF 1.4x and 2x tele extenders.

Lens design

The Canon RF200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM features a lens configuration comprising 17 elements arranged in 11 groups, with the inclusion of three UD lenses. Its aperture diaphragm is composed of nine blades, and the lens offers a minimum focus distance of 0.8 meters (2.62 feet) at the 200mm focal length. Additionally, it has a front filter diameter of 95mm.

Pricing and availability

The Canon RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is set to hit the market in December at a price of $329, with an optional lens hood (known by the codename EW-53B) available separately. Additionally, the Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS will be released next month and will be priced at $1899.
