The compact Sony ECM-778 shotgun microphone has been introduced

Sony has unveiled the ECM-778, a shotgun microphone tailored for filmmakers and content creators who need premium audio performance in a compact, lightweight form factor.

With a length of 176mm and a weight of 102g, the ECM-778 is built for on-set flexibility, whether it’s mounted on a boom pole or directly on a camera. It features a newly developed capsule, a precision-engineered brass acoustic tube, and a dedicated electronic circuit board to produce crisp high frequencies and stable mid-low tones—capturing voices and ambient sounds with spatial accuracy.

According to Sony, the ECM-778 provides strong forward directivity by minimizing sounds from the sides and rear across the frequency spectrum. This helps isolate the subject during recording while reducing environmental noise, which is crucial in tight or acoustically challenging shooting environments.

Adaptable Features for Diverse Shooting Conditions

To support real-world filming needs, the ECM-778 includes a built-in low-cut filter to minimize low-frequency noise from wind or handling. It also comes with two windscreen options—a lightweight foam type and a furry wind cover—designed for various recording environments.

The microphone features a precision-machined aluminum body that reduces external vibrations and electrical interference while keeping the build lightweight. It connects via XLR and is compatible with external audio recorders and cameras with XLR inputs, including Sony’s Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless cameras.

Engineered with Input from Sound Professionals

Sony states that the ECM-778 was developed in collaboration with film sound engineers who contributed feedback throughout its design and testing phases. The microphone is praised for maintaining consistent tonal quality across varying distances, which is particularly useful when transitioning from close-ups to wide shots during filming.

The ECM-778 is positioned as part of Sony’s broader ecosystem of tools designed for both professional and independent filmmakers aiming to pair high-resolution visuals with clean, accurate audio capture.
